Rabat – The Moroccan para-cycling team has managed to secure a spot in the Paris-2024 Paralympic Games, set to take place next year, from August 28 to September 8.
Moroccan champions, namely Haitham El Amraoui and Mohamed Bouchfar, were crowned African champions at the African Championships held in the Ghanaian capital city Accra.
El Amraoui, who rides for the Beausejour cycling club, won a gold medal in the road race in Accra between February 8 and 17, while Bouchfra, from COD Meknes, claimed gold in the C2 individual time trial, the Royal Moroccan Cycling Federation (FRMC) announced in a press release.
This qualification for the Paris-2024 Paralympic Games also follows Morocco’s 7th place worldwide and its qualification for the World Championships held in Glasgow between August 5-13, the same source added.
Moroccan cyclists Haitam El Amraoui and Mohamed Bouchfar were respectively ranked 10th and 16th worldwide in para-cycling, according to International Cycling Union (UCI) rankings.
In addition to Morocco, Africa will be represented at the 2024 Paralympic Games by Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana.
According to a statement on the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games website, this upcoming competition will be the largest athletic event to be hosted in France over the course of twelve days, encountering 4,400 of the world’s most exceptional Paralympic competitors.
Beyond simply being a sporting event, the Paralympic Games present a special chance to raise awareness on the relationship between sport and disability, motivate individuals, effect societal change, and advance professional and recreational opportunities that are inclusive of individuals with disabilities, the statement added.
