Rabat – FIFA President Gianni Infantino has praised the inaugural African Football League’s first leg final, following Moroccan club Wydad AC’s 2-1 victory over their South African foes Mamelodi Sundowns.
The match took place on November 5, putting Wydad AC in pole position to win the second leg as well and take the trophy home in this tournament’s inaugural edition.
“The new African Football League has been a great spectacle so far and the first leg of the final was no different,” Infantino said on his Instagram account before extending his best wishes to both clubs for playing a “great game and providing a fitting end to this tournament.”
The tournament, currently in its inaugural edition, is set to become the newest African club competition, taking place alongside the Champions League and Confederation Cup.
The second leg of the final is scheduled for November 12 at South Africa’s Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
Wydad’s head coach Adil Ramzi acknowledged the upcoming challenge in the second leg but expressed confidence in his team’s capabilities.
He asserted: “We recognize that the forthcoming match will be undoubtedly challenging, but we have faith in our abilities. We possess the qualities required to make our mark on the opponent’s turf.”
Before facing the South African club in the first leg of this final, Wydad had defeated Esperance de Tunis in the semi-final on penalties, winning 5-4 after a 1-1 aggregate score from the two matches.
Meanwhile, their adversary for the title of champion defeated Egyptian giants Al Ahly 1-0 in the semi-final.
