Rabat – Morocco’s National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) has warned residents in the country to exercise increased caution and vigilance on highways due to the expected increase in traffic during the new year period.
The agency issued a press release where it instructed all road users in Morocco, including individuals, taxi and bus drivers, as well as shipping truck drivers to observe all road safety measures ahead of the new year’s rush.
The measures include making sure that the vehicles are all up to date with maintenance to make sure that all systems function properly before taking to the road.
It also urged drivers to carefully plan their itinerary beforehand and make sure that all luggage is properly secured before setting on their trip.
Additionally, the press release advised travelers to avoid speeding and follow all traffic rules and precautions, as well as to increase their focus and caution during night drives.
Traffic volumes are expected to increase significantly in Morocco’s roads and highways for the new year period, as people make their way to visit their families and friends for celebrations.
NARSA has been putting several measures in place over the past few years to ensure road safety and reduce the frequency of incidents.
The agency started installing over 550 new-generation speeding radars to replace its old equipment starting in 2021.
The percentage of canceled violation notices significantly decreased after the installation of the new radars, dropping from 53% in 2015 to 39% in 2021, Minister of Transport and Logistics Mohammed Ben Abdeljalil explained earlier this year.
Ben Abdeljalil added that the numbers were similar to those recorded in some European countries, which resulted in more effective radar systems.
NARSA reports an average of 3,600 road accident fatalities and 150,000 injuries each year, resulting in more than MAD 20 billion ($1.95 billion) in material losses.
