Rabat – A report from the Wall Street Journal has said the ongoing massacre in Gaza “is generating destruction comparable in scale to the most devastating urban warfare in the modern record.”

Confirming that the Israeli occupation forces dropped 29,000 bombs on the besieged strip between October 7 and mid-December, the outlet also said 70% of Gaza’s homes and around half of its buildings have been damaged or destroyed.

Only eight of the strip’s 36 hospitals are still in operation, WSJ added, also pointing out that two-thirds of schools have been damaged.

“The word ‘Gaza’ is going to go down in history along with Dresden and other famous cities that have been bombed,” the outlet quoted political scientist Robert Pape as saying. “What you’re seeing in Gaza is in the top 25% of the most intense punishment campaigns in history.”

The WSJ report also highlighted the destruction of several historic and religious sites in the strip, including the Great Omari Mosque and the Church of Saint Porphyrius.

Israel’s occupation forces started a relentless military campaign on the Gaza Strip on October 7, following a surprise attack by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

In the nearly three months since, Israel’s brutal Gaza campaign has killed over 21,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Over 50,000 have also been injured, while 80% of the strip’s 2.2 million population have been displaced.

The indiscriminate Israeli attacks have also killed and injured teachers, doctors, journalists, and UN staff. The war has been the deadliest ever for UN staff, and the number of dead journalists had reached 99 earlier this month.

Experts have agreed that Gaza will require significant rehabilitation after the war stops, with most of the Palestinian enclave’s underground infrastructure for water and gas requiring repairs due to the destruction.

The strip will face unique challenges when it is time to rebuild, the WSJ asserts, due to the blockade by Israeli forces and the uncertainty of who will oversee the region by the time the current offensive comes to an end.
