Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of National Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and Urban Policy Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri gave assurances on Monday that the housing assistance program she introduced will also benefit rural regions, under certain conditions.
El Mansouri declared during a session of the House of Representatives that the housing scheme will include some apartments for the rural population, although they will be rarer than in major and medium-sized towns.
More specifically, the apartments will range in price from MAD 300,000 ($30,000) to MAD 700,000 ($70,000), and the subsidies from MAD 100,000 ($10,000) to MAD 80,000 ($8,000).
While the lack of affordable housing in rural areas has not yet been addressed, King Mohammed VI’s new aid program will also prioritize these regions, the minister said.
El Mansouri said in a statement that her department will launch a digital platform on January 1 for people who want to benefit from the new housing assistance, but did not elaborate on how the aid would be deployed.
“This ambitious program will bring added value to both the urban and rural worlds,” she stated.
According to the minister, grants for the construction of personal homes valued at MAD 300,000 ($30,000) or less will be used to promote social housing in rural areas.
She added that most of the rural population, not being familiar with urban traditions, find it difficult to adapt to living in apartments built for urban cities.
