Rabat – The disciplinary committee affiliated with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Friday suspended Algerian coach Adel Amrouche, the coach of the Tanzanian national team, for 8 matches and fined him $10,000.
The decision comes after Amrouche made a series of hostile statements against Morocco, accusing the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) of manipulating CAF, the governing body of African football.
In a televised interview on Algerian TV earlier this week, Amrouche accused FRMF of using its influence inside the African Federation to choose more convenient time slots for the Moroccan national team.
“Currently, the FRMF is a confirmed power in the African football world, in the last match against Morocco, they forced us to play in the evening when we wanted to play in the early afternoon,” he said.
He went as far as to accuse Morocco of “managing” and “determining” everything in African football including the referees.
His statement on Algerian Television was a stark contrast to his earlier statement on Moroccan Television.
Speaking on Moroccan TV last week, the Algerian coach expressed his warm wishes for North African teams, saying: “I wish only the best for Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.”
His statements on Morocco’s alleged manipulation of CAF triggered widespread backlash from many football fans across Africa. Notably, the Tanzanian Football Federation distanced itself from what it called unacceptable comments from its coach.
Wallace Karia, President of Tanzania’s federation, was quoted by Tanzanian media as saying that the federation does not endorse Amrouche’s remarks.
“We categorically do not endorse this statement, as we respect Morocco for its hard work in the development of football, and we will know how to respond to the coach’s reckless and provocative statement,” Karia said.
