Rabat – Israeli occupation forces have detained 32 Palestinians across various regions on New Year’s Day.

According to a report from the Wafa News Agency, among those detained was the mother of Ahmad Illian, who was killed by Israeli soldiers last week following an alleged stabbing incident at a checkpoint south of Jerusalem.

The detentions took place primarily in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabal al-Mukabber, where Illian’s mother was apprehended.

In addition, in the village of Qatana within the Jerusalem district, another woman was taken into custody along with 12 others.

Palestinian prisoner advocacy groups confirmed that the woman was captured as a means to pressure her sons into surrendering to the army.

The report explains that most of the detained were released after undergoing interrogation. Reports of detentions also surfaced in multiple West Bank governorates, including Nablus, Hebron, Bethlehem, Tulkarm, and Ramallah.

According to Palestinian prisoners’ groups, the total number of individuals detained by the Israeli army since October 7 has now reached a staggering 4910.

Since October 7, 22,000 Palestinians have perished in Israel’s murderous Gaza campaign while 56,000 have sustained injuries.

The constant targeting of civilian infrastructure has left thousands of Palestinians missing, buried under the rubble of buildings destroyed during air raids.

Reports estimate that more than two-thirds of residential units in Gaza have been destroyed, with the majority of hospitals severely damaged or rendered inoperable.

Gaza is currently grappling with acute shortages of essential resources, including food and water. The war has forced 85% of Gazans – over 1.9 million people – to evacuate Northern Gaza.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is sounding the alarm about the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, warning that 40% of Gaza’s population is now facing prospects of famine.
