Rabat – As the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is taking on a new competition dimension, Equatorial Guinea will compete with its Guinean counterpart in the Round of 16 stage.
The match will take place at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe in Cote d’Ivoire at 6 p.m. Moroccan Time, with Sky Sports Football and the Sky Go application broadcasting the game live.
Equatorial Guinea was not named among the favorite nations to win this year’s African Cup, yet the team delivered spectacular performances during the group-stage matches.
Regarded as the underdog to Nigeria, the Equatorial Guinean team ended the first game with a 1-1 draw, before triumphing over Guinea-Bissau 4-2 and finishing with a historic 4-0 win over the host Cote d’Ivoire.
Meanwhile, the Guinean National Elephants debuted their AFCON journey by holding the five-time champion Cameroon to a 1-1 draw. They then played Gambia, in which they won 1-0. However, the Elephants were unlucky in their third game, when the defending champion Senegal slowed down their winning pace by 2-0.
With four points, Guinea qualified as the best third-place team in the Group C standings. In the Round of 16 stage, teams each play once in 90-minute matches that decide whether they move on to the following stage or exit the tournament.
In case of a draw at the end of a game, the competing teams move to a 30-minute extra time, then to consecutively to penalty shootouts if the score is still tied.
