Egg Prices Likely to Drop in Morocco During Ramadan 2024

Fez – Khalid Zaim, the vice-president of Morocco’s National Association of Egg Producers (ANPO), has assured Moroccans that they will buy eggs at a cheaper price during this year’s Ramadan.

According to a report by the French-language Moroccan news website Le360, the ANP president urged Moroccans not to worry about the price of eggs during the upcoming holy month.

“During this month of Chaabane, eggs are available in good quantities and production has increased to meet demand,” the news website quoted Zaim as saying.

Currently, wholesale prices vary between 1 dirham for small eggs and 1.30 dirham for large ones, the report further quoted the official as indicating, stressing that prices are likely to stabilize and even drop after the first week of the holy month.

“Thanks to the efforts of both producers and distributors, this product reaches all regions with good quality and reasonable prices,” he reportedly declared.

If verified, Zaim’s upbeat comments suggest that the egg-supply sector is experiencing a gradual return to normal, having survived high inflation levels and other challenges in recent years.

In the aftermath of the COVID outbreak, the sector faced major difficulties due to the global health crisis, which led to an increase in the price of raw materials, resulting in a sharp rise in the price of compounded foods.

In his comments to Le360, the ANPO chief stressed that some egg producers have been forced to stop their activities after being overwhelmed by successive years of losses due to the stability of egg prices despite high inflation and rising production costs.

According to official estimates, the average annual egg consumption in Morocco is about 200 units per person, compared to an annual average of 224 eggs worldwide. This consumption is 100% covered by the national production, which varies between 17 and 20 million eggs per day.

The 5% surplus production is exported to African countries.

Morocco’s main egg production regions are Casablanca-Settat, Rabat-Sale-Kenitra, and Souss-Massa.
