Fez – The Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration reported on its official website that the number of Moroccans affiliated to social security in Spain reached 318,750 at the end of last January, thus making Moroccans the highest contributing community to the country’s Social Security Fund.
Moroccans topped the ranking, followed by Colombians (174,388) and Venezuelans (146,469), according to data published Friday by the Spanish Ministry.
In April 2022, about 300,000 Moroccans signed up for the country’s social security program.
According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), 879,943 Moroccans were legally established in Spain until January 1, 2022, however, this number almost doubled in the past two years.
Maintaining high figures means Moroccans hold the top spot of legally settled foreigners in Spain, making up 16% of the county’s official foreign community.
The total number of foreign workers affiliated to Spanish social security rose to 2,631,593 people this past January, recording an increase of 37,183 workers compared to December of last year.
Among Spain’s legally settled foreign workers, 852,163 come from European Union (EU) countries, while 1,779,430 come from non-EU countries.
Likewise, the number of Ukrainians registered with the social security system during the same period jumped to 65,511, coming second to Morocco in the ranking.
The average number of foreign registrations decreased in January in all communities, mainly in Catalonia (-8,473 contributors) and in the autonomous community of Valencia (-7,960).
Migrant workers largely contribute to the Spanish public sector. Jobs in public administration and education marked around a 3% rise in November with 3.2% and 3.3% respectively.
However, there has been a notable decrease in the agricultural sector and in the hotel and catering industry.
