Rabat – FIFA has named Moroccan player Bilal El Khannouss as one of the five African talents poised to make a significant impact on the footballing landscape in 2024.
The list included five African players who “shone throughout the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and could continue to grab the headlines in 2024,” FIFA said in a press release.
The statement highlighted El Khannouss’ rapid rise and exceptional talent, which positions him as a player to watch throughout this year.
At just 19 years old, El Khannouss has already garnered attention for his impressive performances, both at the club and international levels.
FIFA recognized his potential and significant contributions to the sport, as well as highlighted his status as a rising star in African football.
The statement spotlighted his recent performances and achievements, including his crucial role in Morocco’s victory at the U-23 AFCON.
The Belgium-born player also made his mark during the Atlas Lions’ remarkable campaign at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he showcased his skills on the global stage.
“My life changed after the World Cup,” said El Khannouss, who was the youngest player in Morocco’s World Cup squad.
Since then, he has continued to excel and demonstrate maturity and prowess.
Born in 2004 in Strombeek-Beever, the Atlas Lion joined his current Belgian club Genk at the age of 14. He played for Belgium’s U15 and U16 football teams.
Later on, both Morocco and Belgium called up the young footballer to play for their respective national teams.
However, El Khannouss chose to don the Atlas Lions’ jersey and represent Morocco in international football. “I listened to my heart … That told me to go for Morocco,” he said, commenting on his choice.
