Rabat – Morocco reiterated in a statement on Thursday its adherence to the “One-China’ policy as a constant foundation of bilateral ties between Rabat and Beijing.
The One China policy refers to a diplomatic distinction that was put forth in 1979 between the US and China, that recognizes the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as the sole government of China with no consideration of Taiwan as a sovereign entity, but instead part of China.
The US instituted this official distinction in efforts to preserve stability in the Taiwan Strait, while still maintaining separate diplomatic relationships between Taiwan and China.
The Embassy of Morocco in China conveyed Morocco’s long-standing position, stressing that this is based on the “cardinal” principles of the country’s foreign policy, characterized by consistency, responsibility, credibility, and solidarity.
“The Kingdom of Morocco attaches great importance to the development and diversification of its relations with the People’s Republic of China in all fields,” the embassy said. “In accordance with the high directives of his Majesty King Mohammed VI and President XI Jinping, who agreed to establish a multidimensional strategic partnership during his majesty’s historic visit to Beijing in May 2016.”
Morocco has frequently reiterated its attachment to the One China Policy, stressing the importance of bilateral ties between the two countries as well as a commitment to strengthen cooperation at all levels, including investment, education, and trade.
Morocco issued a similar statement in 2022, emphasizing the country’s position supporting China on the issue– stressing its principled stance for respecting national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the non-interference in the internal affairs of other UN members.
China and Morocco share a robust trade relationship.
According to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity, Morocco exported $523 million to China in 2021, while the Asian country exported $6.43 billion of goods to the North African country in the same period.
