Rabat – Morocco’s Football Federation (FRMF) has renewed its support in head coach Walid Regragui.
In a statement on Monday, FRMF said that it trusts the head coach to continue leading the Moroccan national team.
The FRMF said that its president Fouzi Lekjaa had several meetings regarding Morocco’s national team participation in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“The meetings reviewed the preparation stages for the competition, its outcomes, and the disappointment felt by all components of Moroccan football,” FRMF said, referring to the Atlas Lions’ defeat against South Africa in the Round of 16 game during the AFCON tournament.
Identifying the shortcomings during the competition, Lekjaa emphasized the necessity to continue to give the Atlas Lions the “deserved status to delight the Moroccan fans in upcoming competitions, especially the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations, (which will be) hosted by Morocco.”
Concluding its statement, the federation renewed its confidence in Regragui to lead the Atlas Lions in the upcoming challenges , providing him with all the means of support to achieve the deserved status for Moroccan football.
Regragui and the Atlas Lions faced a wave of criticism following Morocco’s defeat against South Africa, leading to the national team’s exit from AFCON in the Round of 16 match.
Moroccan fans, however, have expressed unwavering support for the Atlas Lions, while disapproving Regragui’s potential departure Many have taken to social media to express their opinions on the matter.
“We need to turn the page on the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations and focus on the 2025 edition, which will take place in Morocco… Full support to the national team”, one user on X, formerly Twitter, wrote.
“In football, there is always victory and defeat, missed opportunities and other seized,” another user said, adding that “experts can discuss the mistakes and what needs correction…(but)Moroccans rise after every setback, and we will continue to dream because one day we will achieve the second trophy. Thanks to Achraf and the rest of our national team players and staff.”
The Atlas Lions, including Regragui, apologized to Moroccan football fans for the early exit from the competition.
In a post-game conference last week, Regragui said that he and the Moroccan Football Federation will assess the Atlas Lion’s performance during the AFCON and make decisions for the team’s benefit.
“Yes we failed, but we will all sit together…we have time right now…and we will make the best decision for Morocco,” he said, expressing pride of the Moroccan football team.
