Rabat – Morocco is set to see strong thunderstorms accompanied by hail and powerful winds, along with dust blowing on Sunday, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology.
According to the Directorate’s memo, areas including Al Hoceima, Chefchaouen, Ouezzane, Nador, and others are likely to experience locally heavy thunderstorms, with hail expected to reach between 25 to 40 millimeters per hour. The weather pattern is expected to persist from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.
In addition, strong wind gusts, ranging from 75 to 90 kilometers per hour, are predicted to hit the regions of Fahs-Anjra, Tangier-Assilah, Fez, Boulemane, and others. The winds may result in regional dust blowing from 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Images circulating online show that some cities in Morocco are already experiencing severe weather conditions. Earlier today, Oujda and Berkane were temporarily plunged into darkness due to a dust storm.
Earlier this week, Morocco’s Motorway Company issued a statement warning drivers in several provinces of the potential impact the weather conditions could have on road safety.
The organization recommended that drivers assess the weather conditions before traveling.
Dust storms have previously caused extensive property damage and casualties throughout Morocco.
Last month, a 29-year-old woman tragically lost her life in Tangier, in a devastating accident where part of a residential building’s facade collapsed due to strong winds.
