Rabat – The Moroccan beach soccer team won the COSAFA beach football tournament held in South Africa, after beating Mozambique in the final match held on Saturday, according to a report by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).
With the game held in the South African city Durban, Morocco finished the game triumphant against their Mozambican counterpart with 4-3 on penalty shootouts, after tying the score 4-4 in regular time.
Morocco‘s goals were scored by Zouhir Jabbari, Adnan Oubahri, Badr El Kraichly, and Yasser Abada. Morocco had qualified for the COSAFA final last Friday, after beating Malawi 9-6.
During the group stage matches, Senegalese coach Oumar Sylla’s squad had beaten Mozambique 5-2 on the first match day, before losing 3-2 to Angola on match day 2.
However, the Atlas Lions’ resilient spirit led them to win match day 3 over Tanzania 2-1, to lead the group B standings.
The championship ran between March 17-23 with eight competing nations.
Sylla, former Senegal coach, was appointed coach of the Moroccan beach soccer squad in 2022. Among Sylla’s many career accomplishments with Senegal are three Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations championships.
He also reached the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup quarterfinals twice and a semi-final in the championship’s last edition. This achievement marked the first time an African country had advanced this far in the international competition.
