Rabat – Morocco’s women’s national football team was ranked 58th in the world in the latest FIFA update on Friday.
On the African continent, the Atlas Lionesses are ranked third with an impressive tally of 1433.23 points. Nigeria leads the African rankings, closely followed by South Africa.
Meanwhile, Spain reigns supreme at the top of the FIFA Rankings, overtaking other European powerhouses the United States.
England ranked second, followed by France, the United States, Germany, and Sweden. Japan came in 7th place, followed by the Netherlands in eighth place, Canada in ninth, and Brazil in tenth place.
Women’s football in Morocco has made significant strides in recent years. Just a few months ago, the Atlas Lionesses became the first-ever Arab women’s team to qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“Football in Morocco has gone from strength to strength in recent years,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on Thursday.
He continued: “While the men’s team reached the last four at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the women’s team have made such impressive strides, thanks to the support of the government and the Moroccan Football Association, and the talent of the players.”
The FIFA chief made the comments on the sidelines of the world football governing body’s announcement that Morocco will host the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for five years.
“I believe hosting the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup over five years will inspire so many more girls – and boys – to take up football in the country,” he said.
