Rabat – Morocco continues to rank among the safest countries in the world, with the North African nation recording no terrorist attacks over the past five years.

According to a recent report from the Global Terrorism Index 2024, Morocco scored 0.000, a positive score reflecting the success of the country’s counterterrorism efforts.

The North African country was placed in the 89th place on a list where higher rankings mean that countries are more exposed to terrorism threats. This latest ranking indicates that Morocco’s security scores have improved over the past year, with the country moving from 83rd place in the 2023 ranking to 89th this year.

Put together by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the report maintains that 2024 has been marked by an alarming rise in terrorist attacks worldwide. “Deaths from terrorism rose to 8,352 in 2023, a 22% increase from the prior year. The number of terrorist attacks decreased to 3,350 in 2023, a reduction of 23% from the 4,321 attacks in 2022,” the report says.

Morocco is widely considered a regional and international model in counterterrorism efforts. In December 2023, the United States State Department lauded the effectiveness of Morocco’s counterterrorism approach in its 2022 Country Report on Terrorism.

Notably, the Country Report highlighted Morocco’s efforts in strengthening security mechanisms to counter the persistent national, regional, and global terror threats.

The report equally expressed satisfaction with the “strong” security cooperation between the US and Morocco while calling for cementing the strategic partnership.

“The Government of Morocco continued its comprehensive strategy, which includes vigilant security measures, regional and international cooperation, and counter-radicalization policies,” the State Department said in its report.

The report went on to shed light on Morocco’s efforts to mitigate the risk of terrorism in 2022, saying the country made fewer terrorism-related arrests that year compared to the pre-COVID period.

According to data cited in the report, Morocco’s security services arrested at least 20 individuals in  10 counterterrorism operations in 2022. The arrests also included the dismantling of cells in the early phases of planning attacks against different targets, including security service buildings and prominent public figures.
