Rabat – Spanish-Moroccan international footballer Brahim Diaz’s grandmother, Dolores Bueno Bravo, spoke to the Spanish media outlet ElDesmarque in a recent interview about her grandson’s decision to defend the colors of the Moroccan national football team.
“Spain has called him but he is going to play for Morocco; his father and grandmother are from there [Morocco],” Bravo said, stressing the fact that it was difficult for Diaz to choose between Morocco and Spain after several months of negotiations.
During the interview, Bravo declared that she will be supporting Morocco, given that Diaz will henceforth be wearing the Moroccan jersey. “Now I will be from Morocco, I will support him wherever he goes,” his grandmother confessed.
For his part, Spain’s national team’s head coach Luis de la Fuente expressed his opinion on Diaz’s choice, saying: “I respect his position, everyone is free to make their own decisions.”
De la Fuente went on to explain that “there are always three maxims (choices) to be selected.” The first is that he can play in the national team, the second is his will to do it, and the third is that the coach selects him.”
Diaz is expected to feature in the Moroccan national team squad list on March 14 in order to take part in the upcoming friendly matches against Angola and Mauritania. The games will be played on March 22 and 26 at the Adrar stadium in Agadir.
Born to a Spanish mother and a Moroccan father, Diaz has played for Manchester City and AC Milan, two of the best European teams. With 32 games played, the 24-year-old attacking midfielder has scored 8 goals and provided 4 assists for Real Madrid this season.
