Rabat – The Australian National Imams Council has officially declared that this year’s Ramadan will officially begin in Australia on Tuesday, March 12th, 2024.
The first night of the Holy Month of Ramadan and Taraweeh Prayer will be on Monday, March 11th, 2024, after sunset (after Isha prayer).
This announcement comes after extensive consultations between the Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, and the Imams from the Australian Fatwa Council.
Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and is seen as a way to build self-discipline, empathy for the less fortunate, and greater devotion to God.
While Islam remains a minority religion in Australia, it has been growing steadily.
According to 2021 census data by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there are now over 813,000 Muslims living in Australia, making up 3.2% of the total population.
During Ramadan, Muslims will fast for 29-30 days, breaking their fast at sunset with a meal known as iftar. In Muslim-majority countries, life often takes on a more relaxed pace during this spiritual month, with shorter working hours allowing people more time for prayer and reflection.
In Australia, like in all Muslim-minority countries, observers will continue on with their daily work and activities, while also making time for increased worship.
Mosques and community centers will host special nightly prayers and share free evening meals. Many Australian employers and schools are also making accommodations for their Muslim staff and students.
As Ramadan begins across Australia, Muslims and non-Muslims alike are finding ways to support each other during this important month of religious observance.
