Rabat – The delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged city of Gaza resulted in a tragic incident, claiming the lives of five individuals and leaving ten others injured.
According to reports from Agence France-Presse (AFP), the casualties occurred on Friday, March 8, when packages of aid were dropped by planes over Gaza City.
The accident unfolded in the Al-Chati refugee camp, located to the west of Gaza City, as recounted by Mohammed al-Chiekh, the chief nurse in the emergency department at Al-Shifa Hospital.
“It is a tragedy added to the tragedy experienced by the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” said Mahmud Basal, a spokesman for civil defense in Gaza, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Among the injured, some suffered severe wounds, further exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis plaguing the region.
Initiated by the United States, alongside countries such as Jordan and France, the humanitarian drops aimed to alleviate the distress faced by Gazans amid the ongoing Israeli blockade.
The United Nations has warned of a looming famine in the area, underscoring the urgency of humanitarian intervention.
Amid conflicting reports regarding the origin of the dropped aid, investigations are underway to determine the circumstances leading to the tragic incident.
While a Jordanian military source denied involvement in the mishap, asserting that their aid drop went smoothly, questions linger about the source of the dropped packages that caused casualties.
Home to 2.4 million people, Gaza has been the scene of major aggression by the Israeli occupying forces (IOF) since October 7.
This disaster further highlights the plight of the Palestinians in Gaza, who have endured unrelenting violence and hardship as part of the ongoing aggression of the IOF.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Israeli ground and air operations have killed 30,878 people in the Gaza Strip, most of them civilians.
