Rabat – Air Arabia, a leading airline, soared to new heights as it unveiled its latest venture: a newly inaugurated airbase at Tetouan’s Saniat R’mel airport.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, graced by prominent figures including the Wali of the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, Younes Tazi, and Air Arabia Maroc CEO, Laila Mechbal, marked a significant milestone in the company’s expansion strategy.
Mechbal emphasized on the strategic importance of this move, heralding the introduction of 13 direct flights to key European destinations, including Amsterdam, Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, and Brussels.
“Tetouan’s allure, coupled with its proximity to the famed blue city of Chefchaouen, makes it a prime tourist destination,” she remarked during the press briefing, radiating enthusiasm for the launch, which solidifies Air Arabia’s position with its sixth airbase in Morocco.
Youssef Bennani, Director of Marketing and Commercial at ONDA, echoed Mechbal’s sentiments, affirming that the new airbase is a timely response to the surging air traffic demands.
He cited Saniat R’mel airport’s impressive growth, with passenger numbers skyrocketing by 35% in 2023 compared to the previous year.
Local stakeholders, including Moncef Al-Toub, President of the Provincial Tourism Council of Tetouan, welcomed the development with open arms, foreseeing a boon for the province’s tourism and commercial sectors.
Al-Toub emphasized the economic ripple effects of the new routes connecting Tetouan to Madrid, Barcelona, and Malaga, lauding them as catalysts for local economic vibrancy.
Situated a mere 7 km from Tetouan, Saniat R’mel airport achieved a historic milestone in 2022 by surpassing 100,000 passengers. Since then, the airport has diversified its offerings, attracting a variety of airlines and routes, including Air Arabia’s latest additions.
This expansion comes hot on the heels of Air Arabia’s recent announcement to bolster its flight services between Rabat and Agadir, responding adeptly to escalating travel demands.
With the addition of three new weekly flights, the airline is poised to enhance connectivity and accessibility between the administrative heart of Rabat and the picturesque coastal haven of Agadir.
