Doha – In a significant development for Egypt’s agricultural sector, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Elsayed Al-Qasir, announced the successful opening of the Moroccan market for Egyptian potatoes.
According to the official statement by the Egyptian ministry, this milestone comes as part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to expand international markets for Egyptian agricultural products, bolstering the nation’s economy with increased cash reserves.
The announcement follows a report by Saad Moussa, supervisor of the Egyptian Agricultural Quarantine, confirming that the Moroccan agricultural authorities (ONSSA) have officially approved the import of Egyptian potatoes. This development allows Egypt to commence potato exports to Morocco immediately, further diversifying its agricultural export portfolio.
Egypt’s agricultural sector has been experiencing remarkable growth, with export volumes surpassing 2.2 million tons during the first quarter of 2024, valued at approximately $1.5 billion.
This represents a substantial $300 million increase compared to the previous year, despite the challenges posed by supply chain disruptions and selective export bans aimed at strengthening the domestic market.
As the second-largest export sector in Egypt, agriculture generated an impressive $9 billion in revenue from fresh and processed products last year. The country’s proactive approach to opening new markets for its commodities has been instrumental in enhancing its foreign currency reserves and supporting the national economy.
