Rabat – Moroccan international footballer Azzedine Ounahi is allegedly considering quitting Ligue 1 club Olympique Marseille (OM) in the upcoming summer transfer window due to his inconsistent playing time.
According to the French sports daily L’Equipe, Olympique de Marseille’s management is open to selling its Moroccan midfielder this summer if a compelling offer comes in.
“For the coming summer, OM will not oppose his departure in the event of an interesting offer,” L’Equipe reported on Wednesday.
The Atlas Lion has struggled to properly integrate into the OM’s game squad after coming from Angers and from a stellar showing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, L’Equipe noted.
The French newspaper compared Ounahi’s records with OM and the Moroccan national football team, noting that he has been in consistent form with the latter and scored four goals in 28 games. By contrast, the Moroccan midfielder has mostly looked out of place at OM.
But it remains to be seen whether the Moroccan will leave the French club this summer, with OM President Pablo Longoria declaring during a press conference earlier this year that Ounahi will stay with the Ligue 1 team until 2027.
“Azzedine Ounahi is not for sale. We are very satisfied with him; he is progressing well,” Longoria said, speaking highly of Ounahi’s potential. Longoria’s statement also came in response to speculations about Ounahi’s likely departure from OM.
Ounahi was coveted during the winter transfer window by Saudi club Al Hilal, where Morocco’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou plays. But the midfielder turned down the offer, L’Equipe revealed, adding: “Azzedine Ounahi often regrets not having taken the opportunity to sign for Saudi Arabia this winter.”
Other European teams, such as Brentford in London and the Spanish teams Villarreal and Getafe, are also reportedly interested in signing the Moroccan midfielder.
