Rabat – Minister of Agriculture Mohamed Sadiki has stated that livestock intended for Eid Al Adha is estimated at 7.8 million.
The minister made his remarks on Monday at the House of Representatives, when he shared the data from an assessment carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture in coordination with various professionals.
The data shows that the 7.8 million livestock for Eid Al Adha includes 6.8 million sheep and one million goats.
The minister said that the demand for livestock is estimated at around 6 million, including 5.4 million sheep and 600,000 goats.
The number of sheep and goats prepared for slaughter stands at 4.8 million, he said, adding that imported sheep for the occasion stands at 220,000.
The minister predicts that the imported sheeps will reach 250,000 in the next two days, with a prospect of 600,000.
The minister recalled the government measure of granting a subsidy for for the imports intended for slaughter. The government granted a subsidy amounting to MAD 500 per sheep. The measure has been implemented since March 15 and will continue until June 15.
Sadiki said that the subsidy for sheep imports is an exceptional and temporary measure aimed at preserving the national herd and stabilizing prices.
The minister’s remarks came amid concerns over the soaring prices of herd earmarked for Eid Al Adha.
Recently, a social media campaign erupted, with citizens across the country calling for cancellation of Eid Al Adha due to concerns over overpriced livestock.
