Rabat – Around 97% of Morocco’s beach waters meet quality standards. The findings come from the June 2024 monitoring campaign, which assessed both bathing water and sand quality, according to a recent report from the Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.
The ministry’s report indicates that out of 198 monitored beaches, 193 comply with established quality standards, leaving only five beaches falling short.
This marks a significant improvement from 2003, when only 79 beaches were under surveillance. As of 2024, the number has risen to 196 beaches, as per the 2023 report.
To ensure the continued quality of bathing waters for the current summer season, the ministry has implemented three key mechanisms.
First, electronic access to detailed reports on water and sand quality is now available at https://labo.environnement.gov.ma.
Second, bi-weekly bulletins will be issued, detailing the quality of bathing water across all monitored beaches.
The updates will be accessible to beach managers via a digital platform, enabling them to display this information to visitors and beachgoers. Immediate actions will be taken if any beaches fail to meet quality standards.
The third initiative involves the Iplages mobile application, which provides real-time updates and comprehensive information about beach conditions.
The app is designed to keep the public informed about water quality, sand quality, and overall beach compliance with health standards.
The ministry stressed the importance of these measures, noting that the annual publication of monitoring results empowers the public, visitors, and local authorities to take necessary actions to improve bathing water quality.
