Rabat – A recent social media video has brought the difficulty level of the Moroccan Baccalaureate mathematics exam to the forefront of discussions among French educators.
Posted by a French high school math teacher named Lucas, the video compares the French and Moroccan baccalaureate exams and highlights the significant differences in content.
The Moroccan exam included problems involving function transformations, advanced calculus concepts like finite increment theorems, and complex number equations, Lucas explained.
He expressed surprise at the exam’s complexity, stating that these topics are typically encountered in later stages of French education, such as preparatory classes or even university-level math courses.
The video has garnered attention from other French math teachers. Rémi Chautard, a high school teacher interviewed by Le Figaro Étudiant, acknowledged the difficulty of the Moroccan exam.
“It wouldn’t be suitable for our French students in its current form,” he remarked. Chautard further noted that some topics tested in Morocco aren’t part of the standard French high school curriculum.
He pointed out the presence of advanced algebra and calculus concepts that more closely resemble the curriculum of France’s elite preparatory classes for the prestigious Grandes Ecoles.

Interestingly, Chautard suggested the Moroccan exam might even be more challenging than the “Capes” exam, a notoriously difficult test taken by aspiring French math teachers.
Although he cautioned against drawing definitive conclusions, he acknowledged a potential difference in educational philosophies.
“Morocco may be prioritizing a more rigorous approach to mathematics education,” Chautard suggests. “Further analysis is needed to understand the underlying reasons for the curriculum differences.”
The video has sparked conversations in France about the current state of math education in the country.
Some educators are calling for a review of the French Baccalaureate math curriculum, with a focus on potential adjustments to ensure students are adequately prepared for higher education and future careers.
