Rabat – At a ceremony hosted at the Moroccan Embassy in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, Astanah Abdul Aziz, former Malaysian Ambassador to Morocco, was awarded the prestigious Grand Cordon of the Wissam Alaouite.

This distinguished honor, bestowed by King Mohammed VI of Morocco, signifies recognition for Abdul Aziz’s exceptional service and dedication during her tenure in Morocco.

The award was presented to Abdul Aziz by Mohammed Saidi, Business Manager of the Moroccan Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

Saidi highlighted in his remarks that the royal decoration symbolizes appreciation for Abdul Aziz’s efforts in consolidating bilateral relations between Malaysia and Morocco.

Aziz stated that she felt deeply honored to receive this prestigious royal decoration from King Mohammed VI, acknowledging it as a testament to her diplomatic efforts and commitment to fostering ties between the two nations throughout her diplomatic mission.

The Malaysian diplomat underscored the longstanding and fraternal relations between Malaysia and Morocco, commending Morocco’s comprehensive development efforts.

Several agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoU) have been signed between the two nations.

By 2008, bilateral trade between Malaysia and Morocco had approached $65 million. Malaysian exports to Morocco totaled $50.6 million, whereas Moroccan exports to Malaysia amounted to approximately $14.4 million.

She also pointed out Morocco’s recent achievement of becoming a Sectoral Dialogue Partner with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), noting that Malaysia is slated to assume the ASEAN presidency in 2025.

ASEAN is a political and economic union comprising 10 states in Southeast Asia, who state that they are dedicated to fostering economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in the region, while also advancing regional peace and stability.

Morocco’s designation as ASEAN’s first North African Sectoral Dialogue partner in September 2023 underscores its pivotal role as a key interlocutor within this significant geopolitical and economic bloc.

At the ceremony, Aziz highlighted this milestone as indicative of Morocco’s increasing influence and strategic importance on the international stage.

The conferral of the Grand Cordon of the Wissam Alaouite upon Abdul Aziz not only honors her diplomatic service but also reaffirms the enduring bonds of friendship and collaboration between Malaysia and Morocco.

As both nations aim for continued collaboration and mutual prosperity, this recognition stands as testament to diplomatic efforts aimed at enhancing their bilateral relations.
