Rabat – Astronomers expect Eid Al Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice to either fall on Sunday, June 16 or Monday, June 17.

The official date is still unconfirmed as religious committees in Muslim countries will sight the crescent moon for Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth and the last month in the Islamic calendar, this week.

It is expected that the sighting of the moon will take place on Friday, June 7. Astronomers already expect that committees sighting the moon will announce Saturday as the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the month that also marks the start of the annual Hajj season.

If Saturday is the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah, Monday, June 17 will be automatically Eid Al Adha as the feast falls on the tenth day of the Islamic month.

In Morocco, astronomers expect Eid Al Adha to be on Monday, June 17. In Saudi Arabia and the UAE, astronomers are still debating and  said that it will either take on that same day, or the Sunday before.

Saudi Arabia called its religious committees to sight the crescent moon on Thursday to mark the start of the new and final Islamic month in the year.

Morocco is expected to sight the crescent moon for the month on Friday  as well as Pakistan, and many other countries.

Eid Al Adha is one of the most significant and holiest festivities in Islam as it commemorates prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismael as an act of obedience to God.

Morocco has been preparing for the celebrations, with souqs (traditional markets) across the country receiving customers seeking to buy their livestock for the feast.

Minister of Agriculture  Mohamed Sadiki said earlier this week that committees earmarked 5.8 million sheep and goats for the upcoming feast.

Sadiki emphasized collaborative efforts with the Ministry of the Interior, local authorities, and territorial communities to establish 34 temporary livestock markets nationwide.

The preparation for the feast, however, is marked by uncertainty as many people complain about the exorbitant prices of livestock across Moroccan markets.
