Gaza – Following their release on Thursday from Ofer prison in the occupied West Bank, eight Palestinian prisoners, including two women, claim to have been subjected to torture and threats by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) during their detention.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society transported the freed prisoners to Al-Aqsa Hospital in central Gaza, where they received medical treatment for apparent physical abuse.
Witnesses reported that several prisoners were grimacing in pain, with one woman so debilitated that she had to be carried on a stretcher.
Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, reporting from Deir el-Balah in Gaza, described the released detainees as “completely exhausted.”
The prisoners, detained at various times, included an aid truck driver taken into custody at the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing as well as a woman arrested after visiting the West Bank with her child. The official reason for their detention is unknown.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society confirmed it provided immediate first aid to the prisoners at the Kissufim military checkpoint before transferring them to Al-Aqsa Hospital.
These releases occur amidst a brutal aggression of IOF, which has led to devastating casualties among Palestinians.
The Palestine Prisoners Society and the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Commission report that Israeli forces have detained approximately 9,800 Palestinians in the West Bank since Israel’s devastating war on Gaza began.
In its tenth month, Israel’s war toll is staggering, with at least 39,175 Palestinians killed and 90,403 injured in Gaza. The humanitarian situation is dire, as hospitals are overwhelmed with injured civilians and face severe shortages of medical supplies.
The torture allegations highlight the severe conditions faced by Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody. International human rights organizations have repeatedly called for investigations into the treatment of these prisoners, citing concerns over the use of excessive force and violations of international law.
