‘Gaza Is Not Alone’: Thousands Protest in Tangier in Support of Palestine, Oppose Israel Ties

Marrakech – Thousands of Moroccans took to the streets of Tangier yesterday to demonstrate their solidarity with the Palestinian people, advocating for the end of diplomatic ties with Israel.

The protest, organized by the Moroccan Front in Support of Palestine and Against Normalization, brought together leftist parties and Islamist movements.

Demonstrators, carrying Palestinian flags, marched through the main streets of the northern city, chanting “Gaza is not alone.”

According to AFP, the choice of Tangier as the protest location was intentional, following unconfirmed reports of an Israeli navy ship docking at the local port in early June during its journey from the United States to Israel.

Similar large-scale protests to Tangier’s have taken place throughout the country since the outbreak of the war on Gaza in October. Protestors are calling for a complete end to Morocco’s diplomatic ties with Israel, which were renewed in December of 2020.

This opposition has intensified over the past nine months of Israel’s onslaught, despite the limited resistance to the diplomatic relationship prior to the beginning of October 7.

Morocco has frequently expressed support for the Palestinian cause, calling for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire to the devastating war on civilians in Gaza.

In addition, humanitarian aid have been sent to Gaza to mitigate the crisis.

On June 24, King Mohammed VI ordered the deployment of 40 tons of medical supplies to the Gaza population by land. Morocco sent a similar humanitarian aid to Gaza in March.

As the conflict continues, the Moroccan people’s solidarity with Palestinians remains strong, from Tangier to many other cities throughout the country.
