Rabat – Morocco is set to celebrate the beginning of the Islamic New Year on Sunday, July 7.
The announcement came this evening from the Islamic Affairs Ministry following the traditional crescent moon sighting conducted earlier today.
The ministry confirmed that the first day of Muharram, the inaugural month of the Islamic lunar calendar, will coincide with Sunday, July 7.
In their announcement, the ministry extended heartfelt good wishes and congratulations to the Moroccan people and the royal family on the occasion.
The Islamic New Year, known as Hijri, is named after the Arabic word for migration. The occasion refers to the Prophet Mohammed’s migration from Mecca to Medina, two holy Muslim cities in what is now Saudi Arabia.
The milestone event took place in 622 AD and marked the beginning of the Hijri or Islamic New Year as 1 AH (After Hijra).
Sunday – Muharram 1, the first day of the Islamic calendar – will mark the beginning of the year 1446 AH.
Many other Araba and Muslim-majority countries have confirmed the celebration of the Islamic New Year on Monday.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced the news earlier this week, aligning with Morocco’s date for the start of the new Islamic year.
