Rabat – Morocco has been elected by acclamation to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2024-2026 term, a pivotal position that enhances the country’s influence in global nuclear diplomacy.
The decision was made during the IAEA’s 68th General Conference in Vienna on Thursday, and highlights Morocco’s rising role as a key player in international forums.
Representing Africa, Morocco’s election underscores the international community’s confidence in the country as a mediator of peace, dialogue, and multilateral cooperation.
The appointment aligns with the leadership of King Mohammed VI, whose vision has promoted Morocco’s active role in creating consensus across global institutions.
Azzeddine Farhane, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, expressed the country’s commitment to fostering South-South cooperation, with a particular focus on Africa.
Farhane noted in a statement to MAP that under the King’s guidance, Morocco has positioned itself as a steadfast advocate for African interests in international forums.
During its upcoming term, Morocco aims to champion initiatives in nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
Farhane further said Morocco aims to use its seat on the IAEA Board to advance technical cooperation, particularly in areas critical to African development, such as agriculture, water management, healthcare, and environmental protection.
The IAEA Board of Governors, composed of 35 member states, plays a crucial role in setting the agency’s policies and overseeing its operations.
Morocco previously held the presidency of the IAEA General Conference in 2020, further cementing its commitment to nuclear diplomacy.
Founded in 1957, the IAEA is tasked with promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy while preventing its misuse for military purposes. The agency operates under the umbrella of the United Nations, reporting regularly to the UN General Assembly and the Security Council.
