Severe Floods in Morocco Result in 11 Deaths, Multiple Missing Persons

The severe storms that impacted seventeen provinces and prefectures across Morocco caused the death of 11 individuals.

The Ministry of Interior shared data from a preliminary assessment today, noting that the fatalities occurred in the provinces of Tata (7 people), Tiznit (2 people), and Errachidia (2 people, one of whom is a foreign national).

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, Rachid El Khalfi said in a press briefing today in Rabat that nine people remain missing in the provinces of Tata, Errachidia, and Taroudant due to these extreme weather conditions.

Over the past two days, these storms brought about nearly half of the region’s annual rainfall, with some areas even exceeding their yearly average.
Tata recorded 250 millimeters (mm) of rainfall, Tinghir 203 mm, Figuig 114 mm, and Ouarzazate 82 mm.

Regarding material damages, the preliminary report said that 40 houses have collapsed, 24 of which were completely destroyed.

The floods also caused the partial or total collapse of four medium-sized infrastructure projects.

The damage also include 93 road sections, including national, regional, and provincial roads, with traffic cut off.
Public authorities have so far restored traffic in 53 sections, the ministry spokesperson added.

Floods also caused damage to electricity, drinking water, and telecommunications networks.

The devastating casualties caused by the recent floods come just a year after Morocco endured a tragic earthquake that claimed the lives of at least 3,000 people and left 5,000 others injured.

The earthquake not only caused widespread destruction but also left many people homeless.
