As the 2024 Ajyal Film Festival approaches, organizers are preparing to present what they hope will be one of their “most impactful exhibitions to date.” Titled “From Zero Distance,” the exhibit promises to offer a raw and candid look at life in Gaza over the past year, featuring 22 short films that capture the resilience and creativity of a community under extraordinary duress.
Set to be hosted in the heart of Doha’s Msheireb district between November 16-23, the exhibition spans multiple genres—narrative films, animations, and documentaries—all celebrating an artistic community that continues to thrive despite immense challenges.
According to Fatma Hassan Al Remaihi, CEO of the Doha Film Institute and Festival Director, “From Zero Distance” is meant to be a vibrant tribute to the unmatched resilience of Gaza’s artists. “These shorts are not merely stories of survival; they chronicle the strength of artistic expression that persists and endures during the worst of times,” she explained, underscoring the festival’s commitment to amplifying powerful, often underrepresented voices.

Sheikh Khalifa Al Thani, creative director of Intaj, added that each filmmaker has been deeply affected by personal experiences of witnessing horror, creating works that become lasting narratives of courage and hope. “Every film offers a unique perspective on resilience, courage, and humanity,” he said, expressing hope that the films will offer audiences a deeply personal understanding of Gaza’s struggles.
Curated under the guidance of renowned Palestinian filmmaker Rashid Masharawi, the “From Zero Distance” collection invites audiences into the intimate and indomitable spirit of Gaza. The showcase includes notable works by filmmakers Os Bana, Ahmed Aldanaf, Basil Almaqousi, Mustafa Annabih, Mohamed Alshareef, Alaa Ayoub, Bashar Albabaysi, and many others whose contributions reveal stories of both suffering and hope.
The 2024 Ajyal Film Festival will present 66 films representing 42 countries, with a focus on themes of resilience, hope, and community empowerment. Alongside the screenings, attendees can look forward to interactive discussions, special film screenings, and Geekend, a major pop culture event anticipated to be one of Qatar’s largest cultural gatherings. Events are scheduled across Doha, including key venues such as Katara Cultural Village, Sikkat Wadi Msheireb, Lusail, and Vox Cinemas at Doha Festival City.
