King Mohammed VI has firmly reiterated Morocco’s commitment to preserving its territorial integrity, calling on the UN to assume its responsibility in the implementation of its own resolutions.
The UN needs to be bolder and more consequential in getting countries to distinguish between “real” or “legitimate” worlds and “frozen worlds disconnected from reality,” the monarch said, recalling the momentum and the breakthroughs that Moroccan diplomacy has secured over the years.
He spoke of Morocco’s legitimate position in defense of its sovereignty and historical right to the Sahara, noting how it is now backed by much of the international community.
Alluding to Algeria, the monarch deplored the fact that there are still a handful of countries that are clinging to “outdated views” and are “stuck in past narratives” as they continue to oppose Morocco’s reclaiming of its southern provinces.
“Now is time for the United Nations to assume its responsibility and spell out the major difference between the real legitimate world – represented by Morocco in its Sahara – and a world which is frozen in time, and which is disconnected from reality and the developments that have taken place,” the King said.
The monarch’s address to the UN comes amid Algeria’s continued approach of supporting the separatist Polisario Front in its dream of creating an independent state in southern Morocco.
Key in Algeria’s endorsement of the separatist group has been diplomatic lobbying to undermine Moroccan interests or tarnish the kingdom’s reputation on the international stage.

Most recently, sympathizers of the Algerian-backed separatist narrative orchestrated the issuing of a Morocco-bashing ruling by the European Court of Justice, which annulled the EU-Morocco fisheries and agriculture agreements on the ground that the Sahara was not part of Moroccan territory.
Despite the hostile verdict, EU member states and the EU itself have reaffirmed their commitment to the partnership, expressing continued support for Morocco’s stability and territorial integrity.
In his speech today, King Mohammed VI once again hinted at Morocco’s determination to preserve its sovereignty over the Sahara, reaffirming that the country will not be friends or allies with any country that opposes or undermines its territorial integrity.
He also addressed the UN’s failure to apply pressure on Algeria to take responsibility in the ongoing political process to resolve the Sahara. dispute
Despite its central role in the dispute, Algeria continues to misleadingly present itself as an observer rather than a main party, frustrating UN efforts to move forward with a solution.
Algeria’s reluctance to commit to the UN-led process comes as the UN Security Council and other major players on the international stage continue to embrace Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only viable path toward a genuine solution to the Sahara dispute.
The plan, which has received broad international support and recognition from members of the UN Security Council, is often described as the most serious and credible attempt at resolving the dispute.
