Rabat – The Consulate General of France in Tangier unveiled its newly renovated premises on Thursday, marking a significant step in consolidating French diplomatic and cultural services in Morocco’s northern region.

The inauguration ceremony, attended by French Ambassador Christophe Lecourtier, Moroccan officials, and local dignitaries, celebrated a project that reflects the strengthening ties between the two nations.

Housed in a historic building that served as the residence of French consuls general until 2021, the consulate underwent extensive restoration to preserve its 150-year-old architectural heritage.

Efforts focused on structural reinforcement and the meticulous restoration of its interiors, maintaining its iconic charm.

In his remarks, Lecourtier talked about the economic and demographic growth of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, noting its transformation into a thriving hub since the early 2000s.

“Adapting French services to this dynamic environment was an imperative,” Lecourtier said, expressing the importance of expanding educational opportunities and enhancing cultural offerings.

The French community in the region has grown by nearly 5% annually, with around 4,000 French nationals calling it home—many holding dual Moroccan citizenship.

Central to the consulate’s vision is its integration with the Institut Français, creating a unified space at the iconic Place de France by 2025.

The site will house the institute’s services, including a media library and a Campus France office to support educational exchanges.

This collaboration aims to open the historic site to the wider Tangier community, transforming it into a cultural and educational landmark.

The announcement comes as France seeks to deepen its partnership with Morocco in the face of regional and global challenges.

With over 30,000 French nationals living in Morocco and robust economic ties between the two countries, the upgraded consular presence reflects a broader strategy to foster mutual development and collaboration.

As Tangier’s French community continues to grow, the new consulate aims to serve as a “Maison des Français” (a home for French citizens abroad) while strengthening the historical and cultural bond between France and Morocco.
