Rabat – Currently, on loan from West Ham, Nayef Aguerd is eager to make the most of his opportunity and help his team reach new heights. In an interview with Marca on December 21, Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd shared his thoughts on his time at Real Sociedad, his ambitions for the season, and his journey in La Liga.
Real Sociedad fans have quickly warmed to Aguerd, and his strong performances have led to comparisons with former teammate Le Normand, now with Atlético Madrid. However, Aguerd was quick to acknowledge Le Normand’s legacy: “We don’t have to erase what Le Normand did at Real. He will perform at a high level at Atlético once he recovers. I don’t like comparisons between players. I just want to show my level here at Real.”
Despite only being at the club for a few months, Aguerd feels at home in Sociedad’s system: “I feel like I’ve been here for many years, not just a few months. The adaptation has been very smooth, and everyone at Real has helped me a lot.”
The Moroccan center-back also expressed his gratitude for the warm reception from fans and teammates alike: “I am very happy, to be honest. I notice the support of the fans, both on and off the pitch. I am very happy and proud of that. I want to thank my teammates for their help, and the coach for the opportunity to show my qualities.”

Aguerd’s primary goal at Real Sociedad is to help the team compete for a Champions League spot. He believes the squad can challenge the best in Spain, citing impressive performances against Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, and Real Madrid. “We already beat Barcelona, which for me is the best team in the world this year. We drew against Atlético and, although we lost to Madrid, we played a great game,” The atlas lion told Marca.
“Of course we can go to the Champions League, if they already played there last year and played in the round of 16 against PSG. We have to think about that objective,” he added.
Reflecting on his future, Aguerd remains focused on the present. “I came here to find my best form again because I wasn’t playing at West Ham. I want to enjoy every moment here, as I am doing now. I still have two years left on my contract with West Ham, but for now, my only focus is to help Real go as far as possible in the three competitions. The rest, we’ll think about later.”
Having previously played in Ligue 1 and the Premier League, Aguerd has fulfilled a childhood dream by joining La Liga. “I’ve always wanted to play in La Liga, and I started learning Spanish a few years ago to be ready. La Liga is widely followed in Morocco, and I’m happy to have made that dream come true,” he said.
For now, the Moroccan football sensation remains focused on the task at hand — helping Real Sociedad push for a Champions League spot while enjoying the journey in one of Europe’s top leagues.
Aguerd’s journey through top European leagues is a source of pride for Moroccan football fans. His success in La Liga inspires young players across Morocco, showcasing the country’s growing talent. As he pushes for a Champions League spot with Real Sociedad, his achievements reflect the aspirations of Moroccan football, making fans proud and hopeful for the future.
