Rabat – Morocco and Spain are currently enjoying a period of unprecedented bilateral cooperation, according to José Manuel Albares, Spain’s Foreign Minister.
Speaking at the Spanish Congress on Wednesday, Albares described the relationship between the two countries as “vital and mutually advantageous,” underlining the strategic importance of their security partnership in tackling human trafficking and countering terrorism.
The Spanish minister noted that the roadmap agreed upon between the two countries has been remarkably successful, yielding results that are “entirely positive and of immense benefit” to both parties.
Economic ties between Morocco and Spain continue to thrive, with Morocco emerging as one of Spain’s key trade partners.
In the 2023-2024 agricultural season, Moroccan exporters reached a significant milestone by dominating Spain’s bell pepper market. Morocco supplied 93,780 tons of peppers, making up 91.69% of Spain’s total bell pepper imports.
This record-breaking volume, valued at approximately $125.6 million, underlines Morocco’s growing influence in the Spanish market.

In 2023, bilateral trade surpassed $22.3 billion, noting the robust commercial exchanges between the two nations. Notably, nearly 17,000 Spanish companies export goods to Morocco, and over 4,000 Spanish businesses have established a presence in the North African country.
This dynamic partnership, based on security, trade, and cooperation, reflects the deepening ties that are expected to continue flourishing in the years ahead.
In April, Albares reiterated the importance of strengthening bilateral ties between Spain and Morocco, noting the growing relationship as mutually beneficial. Speaking before the Spanish Congress, he highlighted the wide-ranging cooperation between Rabat and Madrid, covering areas such as counterterrorism and human trafficking.
Another telling example of the strengthening ties between Spain and Morocco occurred in November, when Spanish authorities publicly commended Morocco’s General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST) for its pivotal role in dismantling an ISIS-linked terror cell on November 22. The cell, composed of nine members operating in both Morocco and Spain, posed a significant threat to the security of both nations.
In a post on X, the Spanish National Police praised the joint operation, calling it a model of international cooperation. “The collaboration of Morocco’s DGST was decisive in dismantling this cell,” the post stated.
