Abdellatif Hammouchi, the General Director of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST), announced the posthumous promotion of policeman Abdelghni Redouane to the rank of police sergeant.

Redouane, who was a member of the Anti-Gant Unit in Beni Mellal, died during a security intervention aimed at arresting a suspect involved in drug trafficking in Beni Mellal today.

DGSN granted the promotion to the policeman in recognition of his sacrifice with benefits extended to his family.

Redouane was accidentally shot while responding to a violent suspect during an operation.

He succumbed to his injuries after being transferred to the hospital.

The operation targeted a 34-year old suspect, who was wanted on four national warrants for his involvement in drug trafficking.

The  suspect resisted the arrest and threatened officers with a knife.

A member of the police force was forced to use his weapon, leading to an accidental discharge that fatally struck Redouane in the chest.

The operation led to the arrest of two suspects involved in drug trafficking.

Within the drug trafficking operations, police seized 81 tons and 175 kilograms of cannabis last year, a 17% decrease compared to a year earlier.

In 2023, police also seized nearly two tonnes of cocaine as well as six kilograms and 880 grams of heroin.

Furthermore, security services confiscated shipments of psychotropic substances, which amounted to 1.2 million tablets, including those of ecstasy brands.
