Rabat – Morocco’s national police (DGSN) announced the seizure of 136 kilograms and 66 grams of cocaine at the El Guerguerat border post in a joint operation with customs authorities.

The drugs were found aboard a truck bearing license plates from an unspecified African country, according to an official statement released on Thursday evening.

The truck, which was inspected at the southern border crossing connecting Morocco to Mauritania, was carrying two individuals of sub-Saharan African nationality. The suspects were immediately detained for further investigation.

In a post on X, the DGSN shared details of the operation: “At the El Guerguerat crossing, 136 kilograms and 66 grams of cocaine were seized in a joint operation between national security and customs. The intercepted shipment was on a trailer attached to a foreign-registered truck coming from an African country, with two individuals on board holding sub-Saharan African nationality.”

The seized cocaine has been transferred to a secure facility for further analysis, while authorities continue to probe the origin and intended destination of the illicit cargo.

Investigators are also examining potential links to international trafficking networks.

Morocco’s strategic position as a gateway between Africa and Europe often places it at the forefront of anti-trafficking efforts, and the country has been upholding this role seriously.

This last seizure embodies the vigilance of Moroccan security forces in disrupting drug smuggling operations and safeguarding the nation’s borders.

Further legal proceedings against the detained suspects are expected as part of Morocco’s broader crackdown on transnational organized crime.

In November, Moroccan authorities also thwarted an attempt at smuggling a huge amount of psychotropic tablets (63,074) and 550 grams of cocaine at the Beni Ensar border crossing in Nador.
