Rabat – The Moroccan Center for Game Theory (MCGT), at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), launched in Rabat today an intensive five-day Winter School program on data economics.

With the launch of this inaugural winter school program, MCGT is bringing together leading experts from across the globe to explore strategic challenges in data economics and digital transformation.

“This Winter School reflects our commitment to promoting excellence in research on strategic issues shaping the future of the digital economy,” said Rida Laraki, founder and current director of MCGT.

The Winter School serves multiple strategic purposes, including talent recruitment for future academic positions and fostering international collaboration.

The intersection of economics, mathematics, and computer science forms the foundation of this year’s program, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of contemporary data challenges.

Through interactive sessions and discussions, participants will explore how these fields converge to address pressing issues in the digital age.

The Winter School will allow participants to explore how Game Theory can address modern data economics challenges in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

Laraki spoke of the program’s role in creating “a unique space for dialogue and collaboration to understand the complex challenges related to data science and artificial intelligence.”

“This will become an annual event,” Laraki noted, explaining that it offers valuable opportunities for doctoral students to engage with international researchers and potentially develop future collaborations.

The event features prominent speakers including Nicole Immorlica, who leads the Economics and Computation group at Microsoft Research, to cover crucial themes including data collection costs, market power in data ownership, and the challenges of data sharing.

“I’m very excited to be here to talk to all the fantastic students and teach them about this very important area,” said Immorlica.

She expressed hope that her discussion would prompt students to “ask relevant research questions that might then influence the way that we run the company and the technologies that we create.”

Other distinguished speakers include Professor Jason Hartline from Northwestern University, Professor Bo Waggoner from the University of Colorado, and Professor Rachel Cummings from Columbia University.

Three of the program’s five leading professors are women, Laraki noted, arguing that this shows the program’s commitment to gender diversity in academic excellence and delivering a message that gender is never a barrier to achieving top-level research positions in the field.

The program demonstrates MCGT’s commitment to bridging theoretical research with practical applications in the digital economy.
