Rabat — DZ Mafia has taken Marseille under siege and the ruthless criminal gang is spreading terror across southern France. Police call it “the most structured and dangerous group” of the 21st century, comparing its methods to South American cartels.
The name “DZ” is short for Algeria, which shows the gang’s cultural roots. This violent network has gone far beyond drug dealing and is now extorting businesses, racketeering, intimidating locals, and even committing hit murders.
In 2023, Marseille became a bloody battleground for mafias following clashes between the Algerian mafia and rival gang Yoda. Over 50 people were murdered, up from 36 the year before.
The battle with Yoda has eased, but tensions are heating up again with the “New Blacks,” a group made up mostly of young Comorians.
Social media plays a dark role and has turned into a weapon in this gang war. Videos and threats abound online and fuel violence, with each side vying for control and promises to outdo the other in shocking and cruel acts.
The DZ Mafia is no longer just about drugs. It’s muscling in on businesses, demanding “protection” money from terrified shopkeepers and nightclub owners. In one case, a kosher shop owner received photos of his family alongside a ransom demand for €250,000.
Another nightclub owner had to hand over €10,000 every month to avoid trouble. The racket only stopped when police arrested 22 people linked to the gang.
In December 2024, chilling graffiti signed “DZ Mafia” appeared on Marseille buildings with Nazi symbols. One message read, “You will all die.”
DZ Mafia is expanding its network and operates now in Lyon and Montpellier, as well as across borders into Spain.
In the past year, police have arrested 119 members, but the gang’s power keeps growing. Authorities warn the gang is turning into an international mafia.
The Algerian gang sows terror and has left Marseille on edge. Residents and business owners alike live in constant fear of reprisals. One victim told the press, “We just want to live and work in peace. Is that too much to ask?”
Authorities promise to fight back, but the gang’s influence runs deep.
