Rabat – Syria’s interim government has announced that the country will resume international air travel on January 7.

State news agency SANA quoted the head of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, Ashhad al-Salibi, saying that the country will “start receiving international flights to and from Damascus International Airport.”

He further detailed that they are working with Syria’s partners to have the Aleppo and Damascus airports ready to welcome flights from all over the world.

Qatar Airlines has recently announced that it will offer flights between Doha’s Hamad International Airport and Damascus International Airport from January 7. This is the first time in nearly 13 years due to the war in Syria.

The airline will offer three weekly flights starting from Tuesday.

Syria’s airport has not been operational since the toppling of the Al Assad regime by the rebel coalition on December 8.

However, this resumption of international flights indicates that the country is ready to revive its aviation sector through re-establishing connectivity and facilitating travel.

The country has undergone over a decade of civil war that damaged many vital sectors, especially due to the meddling of internal powers, regional influences, and international involvement.

Since the collapse of Assad’s regime, the Middle Eastern country is now rebounding from the war, and the world is watching to see if the interim governments will take necessary actions to meet the demands of the Syrian people.

Critics remain cautiously optimistic but still skeptical, especially in the light of controversial amendments that the ministry of education has recently announced, a move that was strongly criticized due to its firmly conservative nature.

Shortly after Assad’s overthrow, Morocco expressed hopes and support for Syria to regain its stability.
