Rabat – China is grappling with an outbreak of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), five years after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Reports and social media posts suggest that the virus is spreading rapidly, with some sources claiming that hospitals and crematories are overwhelmed by the surge in cases.

Videos circulating online depict crowded hospitals, with some users indicating that multiple viruses, including influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Covid-19, are circulating simultaneously.

While there are unconfirmed claims that China has declared a state of emergency, health officials are closely monitoring the situation. HMPV, known for causing flu-like symptoms, can also present symptoms resembling those of Covid-19, raising concerns among citizens and health authorities alike.

In response, China‘s disease control authority announced a pilot monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin.

Reuters reported on Friday that the system, designed to enhance preparedness for emerging respiratory diseases, was being implemented in China. It is expected to help establish protocols for handling unknown pathogens, addressing the shortcomings observed during the early days of the Covid-19 crisis.

The National Disease Control and Prevention Administration confirmed that laboratories will now be required to report cases, allowing disease control agencies to verify and manage infections more efficiently. An official statement revealed an upward trend in acute respiratory disease infections during the week of December 16 to 22.

According to Kan Biao, an official from the administration, China is expected to see an increase in respiratory diseases during the winter and spring months. However, he noted that this year’s overall case count would likely be smaller compared to last year.

Recent reports have indicated a rise in cases of pathogens like rhinovirus and HMPV, particularly among children under the age of 14, especially in northern provinces.

In response to these concerns, Beijing’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, issued a statement emphasizing that respiratory infections typically peak during the winter season, aligning with the surge in respiratory disease cases across the country.
