A vehicle plowed into a crowd in New Orleans’ French Quarter, Louisiana, killing at least 10 people early Wednesday.
Witnesses confirmed to CBS News that a truck crashed into the crowd at high speed.
The driver then exited the vehicle and opened fire on the people. This prompted police to return fire, the report said.
At least 30 people were transported to hospitals to receive medical treatment, according to reports.
CBS News also quoted a spokesperson from the city’s police department as saying that a car “may have plowed into a group of people.”
“Injuries are unknown but there are reported fatalities,” the spokesperson said.
The motive behind the killing is still unknown.
The US government is well aware that ramming attacks have become largely used to target pedestrians in cities across the world.
“In response to these attacks, governments are implementing new policies and physical interventions to securitize pedestrian spades,” the PMC PubMed Central wrote, noting that these kinds of attacks present a “unit challenge because they are unpredictable.”
“They use every day, readily-available vehicles as a weapon of terror,” the website added.
