Rabat – Morocco’s automotive sector is steadily flourishing, but a recent study conducted by the marketing company Sunergia and the news outlet L’Economiste scrutinizes Moroccan households’ ways of navigating car ownership, maintenance, and purchasing decisions.

The findings mainly show gaps between urban and rural communities, generational divides, and financial challenges shaping the market.

Most households do not own a car!

The study’s data show that 70% of Moroccan households do not own a car. Among the remaining 30%, the majority (25%) own just one vehicle, while 4% have two, and only 1% own three or more.

Young adults aged 25 to 44 are more likely to own cars, with nearly 30% in this age group driving their own vehicles.

In rural areas, however, 86% of residents do not own a car.

Seniors over 65 and households from lower-income groups are the least likely to have access to motorization, with 80% and 90% non-ownership rates, respectively.

Meanwhile, car maintenance practices depend on the vehicle’s age. For cars five to ten years old, 33% of owners schedule annual maintenance. Some (23%) opt for quarterly checks, while 6% admit they never maintain their cars, a trend seen mostly among owners of newer vehicles.

The cost of maintenance deters many from servicing their vehicles regularly, with 66% of respondents pointing to financial challenges. Among them, 34% view the expense as high, while 32% consider it excessively steep.

Notably, 45% of women describe the cost as “very expensive.”

New cars attract younger buyers

Around 23% of Moroccans express plans to purchase a car within the next year. Among them, 12% plan to buy it for personal use, while 4% want to purchase it for a family member.

The preference for new vehicles dominates, with 77% intending to buy new cars, especially those aged 25 to 34, where the figure rises to 87%. Second hand vehicles attract only 10% of prospective buyers.

When it comes to financing, 45% of potential buyers plan to rely on personal savings. Others seek external support, with 11% considering bank loans and 10% turning to family loans.
