A Moroccan gallerist is making big splashes of color in the art world in Morocco. Abla Ababou is taking 1-54 by storm—one of the biggest African art fairs out there to show that Moroccan art is just as African as any other.
“When people think of Africa, they picture Sub-Saharan or Black Africa,” she says. “But Morocco is a huge part of this continent.”
Abla is also showing off four top Moroccan artists at Bab Hotel in the art show that runs from February 9 to 28—and their work is breathtaking.

Fatiha Zemmouri crafts stunning pieces from clay and tar—so impressive, they’re in the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
Noureddine Amir creates jaw-dropping installations from organic Moroccan materials. Qatar just hosted one of his latest works.
Hakim Benchekroun captures Morocco’s forgotten monuments with his camera. These relics from Spanish and French rule are fading fast. Ilyas Selfati has lived in Madrid, Japan, and the U.S. His art is a mix of global flair and deep Moroccan roots.

These artists blend Morocco’s past with a fresh, modern twist. And Abla is beaming with pride. “This is the new Moroccan art scene,” she declares. “It’s the future!”
The art show is part of 1-54’s “off” program at the luxurious Bab Hotel.
Abla Ababou owns a gallery under her name in the fancy Souissi area. It first opened in 2017 with big, eye-catching works by top artist Mahi Binebine. Since then, it has grown into a top place for art lovers.

With high ceilings, perfect lights, and a sleek look, it feels like a top museum. It is also home to a chic concept store filled with rare art pieces.
Over the years, the gallery has hosted many events, from book talks to music nights. One of its most popular shows, “Petits Formats & Design” in 2017, wowed visitors with small but striking pieces from 14 artists and a designer.

The latest must-see event, “Une présence en multiples,” ran from December 13, 2024, to January 4, 2025. It put on display special prints, including lithographs and engravings, proving once more that this gallery is a hub for art lovers.
With its mix of authentic and contemporary talent, Abla Ababou Galerie is shaping the future of art in Morocco.
