Intelligence from the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) enabled security services in Nador in Morocco’s Oriental region to arrest three suspects involved in international drug trafficking on Wednesday.
The Nador police arrested the suspects aged between 41 and 57 at the fishing port in Beni Ansar, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said in a statement.
They were caught red-handed as they were in the act of preparing to carry out an international drug trafficking operation.
During a search operation, police seized a total of 20 plastic containers containing 375 kilograms of cannabis.
They also seized three fishing boats and a vehicle that authorities believe the suspects were using to facilitate their drug trafficking operations.
Police put the suspects in custody pending further investigations to arrest potential accomplices.
The operation is part of Morocco’s broader security approach to drug trafficking and smuggling networks.
Last month, police in Morocco’s southern provinces pulled off a major drug bust that resulted in the seizure of 37 kilograms and 683 grams of cocaine at the El Guerguerat border post.
According to the DGSN’s latest annual report, Morocco’s police handled 92,346 drug-related cases last year, arresting 119,692 individuals.
Of those arrested, 287 were foreign nationals, the report detailed.
Police also seized 123 tons and 971 kilograms of cannabis in different operations across the country, as well as 1.9 tons of cocaine, 16.5 kilograms of heroin, and over 1.4 million of psychotropic substances.
