Rabat – A group of Moroccan activists filed a lawsuit against Israeli Minister Miri Regev, who is expected to arrive in Morocco to take part in the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech.
The event kicked off today, bringing together officials from different countries to participate in the ministerial conference.
Describing her as a “terrorist minister,” a statement from the complainants said that the lawsuit is based on accusations against the minister’s “criminal past and her responsibility in the current government for committing war crimes and genocide.”
The activists considered the minister’s presence as provocative to the feelings of the Moroccan people, calling on judicial authorities to take the necessary legal action against the minister.
“This announcement serves as a call to media men and women,” noting that the complaint will be filed on Monday at the court of appeal in Rabat.
Backlash about the potential visit started after Israeli media reported on Regev’s upcoming trip to Morocco.
The Israeli media took issue with the budget allocated to fund the minister’s stay in Morocco.
“The price of the suite at the hotel ranges between 1,200 and 3,700 euros,” i24 News said earlier this month, adding that the minister’s trip, along with her aides could cost over “half a million shekels.”
The visit created another wave of criticism from anti-normalization activists, who are strongly calling on the government to cut ties with Israel.
Morocco’s government has been responding to the sharp criticism by reaffirming its steadfast position supporting the Palestinians’ cause and their rights to enjoy an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
On February 8, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita reiterated Morocco’s position, stressing that the North African country “always supports, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, the unity of the Palestinian people and territory, as well as the creation of the Palestinian state.”
However, Moroccans’ protests against ties with Israel continue amid the government’s reassurance.
These demonstrations against the Israeli genocide have struck a nerve among Israelis, including the former head of the Israeli liaison office in Rabat, David Govrin, who has been under investigation for his involvement in sexual misconduct.
On February 15, Govrin wrote on X, saying: “Another demonstration of support for the Palestinians took place last night near the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech.”
He said that the “phenomenon of burning Israeli flags at these demonstrations has been a routine occurrence,” calling on local authorities to put an end to the “phenomenon.”
In September 2022, reports emerged of allegations linking Govrin to dozens of workplace years-long “irregularities” and sexual misconduct.
In 2023, Govrin also triggered a widespread uproar among Moroccans, who lashed out at his social media posts, including one in which he shared a letter reportedly addressed to King Mohammed VI from the families of hostages held by Hamas.
