Rabat – Saudi Arabia announced today that this year’s Ramadan will begin on March 1.
The moon has been visible in the past several hours, religious authorities announced today. This marks the end of the month of Sha’ban and means the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, will begin on March 1, it noted.
Many other countries announced Saturday as the first day of Ramadan, including UAE.
Morocco, however, is likely to announce that Ramadan will begin on Sunday, March 2.
The North African kingdom is set to announce the news after local religious authorities observe the moon tonight after sunset.
Ramadan brings special rituals to both the atmosphere and the table.
During the month, charitable activities increase and millions of people flock to the mosque at night to carry out extra prayers called Taraweeh.
Beyond spiritual rituals, Ramadan brings vibrancy to nightlife as many prefer to sip a cup of tea or coffee following iftar outside either in a local cafe or in fancy restaurants that also display special shows during the night.
The tables are also festive with different dishes of multiple choices. In Morocco, stuffed msmen or about bread and briouat made of pastilla layers and different savory or sweet flavors either made of peanuts or almonds are kings throughout the holy month.
Some families generally add another main course during iftar or following iftar for isha or suhoor time to prepare for a long day of fasting and heightened spiritual awareness.
The typical breaking of the fast will start with one to three to five dates and a cup of milk or water. Other people prefer juices.
